Reflecting on Teaching - Maintaining Accurate Records - Communicating with Families - Participating in a Professional Community - Growing and Developing Professionally - Showing Professionalism
To reflect on teaching, I started a blog last year per suggested by my technology coach, Tracy Seven. This blog helped me to think about what I am doing well as a teacher, and how I can do things better. Please feel free to view my fifth grade blog.
My blog
I also created a blog as part of my technology class at Clarion University. Again, this is a place to reflect on what I learned from the Professor and from other teachers in the class. Clarion Blog
To maintain accurate records, I keep a hard copy grade book and update grades on Edline weekly. Edline allows me to create graphs of a particular student or a specific subject. This data can be used for RTII, IEP, or other important meetings. As a result of the RTII Child Study Team meetings, modifications such as extended test time and reading tests to certain students can be implemented. The goal of modifications is to make each child confident so they can be successful.
During parent conferences, I communicated to families the reading goals by creating a list of goals which are expected to be met by each student. Differentiation is applied by allowing each student to read at their independent reading level.
Communicating with every family every week can be easy with the use of this Weekly Progress Report. Every weekend after grading all assessments, I attached them to the assessment page that I created which was sent home to the family on Monday. This allowed me to be in contact with every parent every week.
Latest modified copy Parents respond really well to this format. It allows a constant form of written communication specifically about their child's assessments, grades, and progress. The parents and I can discuss the strengths and areas of concern of their child. Then we work together as a team to find a strategy to help the child succeed. Sometimes this may require me to gather extra practice sheets for the family to work on at home. Other situations guide me in helping a struggling student during school hours. This may be implemented by working with a student individually during Title I time, or it may require me to work with a student on number facts while monitoring recess.
